Warehouse security systems can help protect indoor and outdoor assets such as fleet trucks, shipping containers, and inventory. Unfortunately, outdoor surveillance cameras alone are unable to deter burglary and robberies from warehouses and industrial properties. Thieves targeted a California gardening supply warehouse and successfully got away.
California Warehouse Security
According to the warehouse security video, the suspects rammed their truck into a roll up door at a warehouse in the middle of the night. The thieves ran out of the vehicle and set their sights on certain products. They immediately loaded various gardening supplies into the getaway vehicle and left the industrial site. Warehouse security video showed a truck with the name of a nearby business printed on it. The local authorities contacted the business in question and asked if they had a vehicle stolen or missing during the time of the smash and grab.
Officials theorized that the thieves stole the gardening supplies to grow marijuana indoors. It appeared the crime had been pre-planned.
The garden supplier had warehouse security video cameras, but the recorded surveillance video did not provide any value to the local authorities or the business owner.
Canada Warehouse Security
Surveillance cameras on their own do not positively impact warehouse security. A Canadian warehouse learned this lesson the hard way. Several rural Quebec maple syrup facilities were housing an emergency reserve of 37 million pounds of syrup. Unfortunately, warehouse thieves stole more than 25% of it.
During an inventory check, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers discovered over 15,000 empty barrels. The stolen inventory was valued at $30 million. Representatives speculated that the stolen maple syrup was going to be sold in the black market. The inventory check took place 100 miles northeast of Montreal.
Quebec produces about 75% of the world’s maple syrup supply. Despite the warehouse heist, experts believe there would not be an immediate effect on the global supply of maple syrup.
